Where's our Flatterer fans?

Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, currently in the lead in the National Steeplechase Association's trainer standings, has several runners on the card this Saturday. Although he operates his Ashwell Stable in nearby Unionville, Pa., Sheppard's ties to Fair Hill are strong, with many members of the racing community beginning their American careers in his barn.

Most notable among that group is Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup-winning trainer Graham Motion, also based here at Fair Hill Training Center. During Motion's employment with Sheppard, he served as travelling lad to the legendary Flatterer. The photo below (top) shows a then 23-year-old Motion leading Flatterer to the paddock here at Fair Hill before the 1987 Breeders' Cup Steeplechase. In the bottom shot, Sheppard was photographed sharing a visit with Flatterer in 2014 when the remarkable gelding was 35 years old.
